Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty relieves spinal compression fractures by using a surgical filling of the vertebrae, which restores the original shape and configuration. Vertebroplast and Kyphoplasty are similar minimally invasive spine surgery options. Each uses a different product to address instability due to spinal compression fractures. In the Vertebroplasty procedure, your spinal specialist will insert a needle which is guided by an x-ray and targets the damaged vertebra in your back. Then, the doctor will insert a special bone cement. During Vertebroplasty, the cement goes directly into the damaged bone. Each specialist has his or her own preference between Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty, so be sure to discuss which option is best for your situation.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING THE VERTEBROPLASTY PROCEDURE?

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

This minimally invasive procedure was first used in the 1990’s and has since helped specialists achieve excellent outcomes for patients. The success rate is about 90%, and many patients experience rapid relief from their pain symptoms. Most report positive results within 48 hours following surgery. Many patients are able to resume normal activities the day following their procedure.
